ASSEMBLY PLANT
Big Henderson Project
A £2 million manufacturing and car assembly plant may be built on an 82-acre rite at Lincoln road, Henderson. Dominion Motors, Ltd. has lodged with the Waitemata County Council an application for the rezoning of the site.
In a statement the company says it hopes the project, which will provide employment for the large and growing labour force in the area, will be welcomed by the local authorities.
Initially the plant will assemble Morris, Wolseley, Riley and possible M.G. passenger cars, together with light and heavy Morris commercial vehicles and Nuffield tractors. Planning makes provision for a new spare parts warehouse to service dealers throughout New Zealand, and a self-contained service school for the specialised training of mechanics.
As volume warrants, the New Zealand content already incorporated vehicles assembled at existing plants at Newmarket and Panmure will be increased, and provision has been made for manufacturing facilities, the statement says. The managing director of the company (Mr W. Norwood) said he thought the project must be one of the largest operations ever undertaken by a wholly New Zea-land-owned and operated company, and was a measure of the faith his company had in the future development of New Zealand.
