Terrific Outclasses St. Leger Field

AUCKLAND. Back to form he showed at Trentham last month, Terrific outclasses five opponents in the Great Northern St. Leger at Ellerslie yesterday. G. F. Hughes took Terrific to the front with a mile to go.

By the time they reached the three furlongs Terrific was already beginning to draw away. On the turn he was out by five lengths and he finished two lengths in front of his closest pursuer, the Matamata colt. Sentry.

Terrific. as expected, started a hot favourite and paid only £1 10s 6d and £1 4s 6d. The dividend on Sentry was £1 8s 6d. The six runners were strung out over 100 yards at the finish, with Te Rua third, three lengths behind Sentry’ and five lengths in front of Devastation.

The trainer and part-owner of Rochdale, W. Sanders, of Te Awamutu. managed another great win when he took the H. O. Nolan Handicap. Lu Filou, with 9-2, carried more weight than any in the field and throughout the last six furlongs had to cover more ground than most. From a furlong from the finish Lu Filou seemed the winner Royal Poet, which had tried to lead all the way, was by that time spent. Tara’s Pride came on determinedly, but Lu Filou kept him out with a length to spare. The finish for third was closer, with Royal Poet shading Ocean Mist and Golden Defoe. Ocean Mist started slowly and lost much ground. SURPRISE WIN Old and Bold, a local four-year-old raced by Sir Woolf

Fisher and trained by R. L. Collett, surprised everyone with his win in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Islington Handicap. Old and Bold started from No. 18. He had shown nothing in two starts after a spell to suggest he might be at his best again, but after running eighth or ninth he came to

the front early in the run : home and, under the whip . near the finish drew out impressively. On the win-and-place machi ine Old and Bold was the ; fourteenth favourite each i way, paying £5l 9s and £lO ; 14s 6d. The double, Lu Filou ; and Old and Bold, paid £209 , 14s 6d.
