SNOOKER BOOMING
Australian On Tour (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Snooker is one of New South Wales's booming sports, with large purses available for the top professionals, according to E. Charlton, the 35-year-old Commonwealth champion who arrived in Auckland yesterday for a three-week tour of New Zealand. Such is the standard and popularity of professional snooker in the New South Wales area, says Charlton, that licensed clubs are able to outlay £lOOO for a threenight tournament. Until a year ago he was a engineer-fitter at Newcastle and a part-time professional, but now, as a sales representative for a billiards firm, he can play seven months a year. Although an accomplished billiards player, with a best break of 538, Charlton has specialised in snooker, with his best break being 143 (twice).
“On this tour I hope to play attacking snooker,” he said, “as that is the game that suits me—potting the balls rather than playing carefully.”
His itinerary includes playing in Oamaru on April 24 and in Christchurch on April 26.
