Players Train For Tour

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The 15 players chosen for the first New Zealand softball touring team had an hour’s warm-up and coaching at Trentham yesterday. Under the soU national selector-coach, Mr A. J. N. Whelan, the side practised pitching and base throwing with attention to correct back-ing-up and positioning. Mr Whelan said be was sure that by October the team would be a hard-working combination. “In the final analysis of the season, including the trials, the three outfielders—where the weakness appeared to lie —had batted twice as well as the infielders,” he said. The outfielders were clocked for speed around the base paths and over 50 yards in full softball gear. Their speed was exceptional and was certainly no basis for concern, said Mr Whelan.
