RHODESIAN OIL Diversion Through S. Africa Possible

CV.Z P.A. Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 11. A possibility that oil diverted from Rhodesia by British naval action might still reach the colony through South Africa was being considered by United Nations officials today. I his possibility was foreseen after the Royal Navy frigate Berwick, with United Nations backing, yesterday intercepted the Greek-owned tanker Manuela on the high seas and ordered it not to proceed to the Portuguese Mozambique port of Beira.

The Manuela, carrying 15.000 tons of oil believed ' destined for Rhodesia, then headed for the South African port of Durban. Noting that oil piped into shore tanks at Durban could eventually reach Rhodesia by road or rail, diplomatic sources said that if this happened new measures would be sought immediately in the Security Council. The council on Saturday | night gave Britain authority to use force if necessary to prevent oil going through Beira for Rhodesia. This move permitted the) frigate Berwick to put a boarding party on the Manuela' yesterday so as to make sure it would not dock at Beira • the terminus of the oil pipe-) line to Rhodesia. Within hours of the interception, the chief British delegate to the United Nations. Lord Caradon, informed the Secretary-General, U Thant, by telephone of the action and then arranged to present! a detailed written account! today. African members of thei' Security Council wanted Sat- 1 '

urday night’s resolution to call on South Africa to prevent oil getting through to Rhodesia, but they were not successful. Private groups in South Africa are known to be in-

volved in attempts to break the oil embargo against Rhodesia and some crude oil has reached Salisbury by truck, though not in large quantities The problem of Rhodesia’s unilateral declaration of independence from Britain last November will come up in the United Nations again tomorrow when the Colonial Committee meets. African delegates are expected to press once more for drastic action to overthrow the Government of Mr lan Smith
