Dorati Touring
The Hungarian-born conductor Antal Dorati will visit New Zealand with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra during its tour in August and
September. Dorati, who visited New Zealand in 1939 as conductor with the Covent Garden Russian Ballet Company, is today one of the world’s most widely-known conductors.
He has made hundreds of recordings, and top-ranking orchestras with which he has served include the Minneapolis Symphony, the London Symphony, the Hague Resident Symphony and the 8.8. C. Symphony Orchestra. In 1965 he accepted the post of chief conductor with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
As a guest conductor, Dor-
ati has appeared with leading orchestras throughout the world and he has established an impressive reputation as a trainer of orchestras.
The Minneapolis Symphony developed into a first-class orchestra in Dorati’s hands and the results he achieved during his four years with the 8.8. C. Symphony between 1961 and 1964 were applauded enthusiastically by London critics. The other conductor with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra during its New Zealand tour will be the young Indian, Zubin Mehta. He is firmly established in North America and Europe and is still in his 20s. The Israel Philharmonic will give New Zealand concerts in the four main centres and in Hamilton between August 31 and September 10.
