TROTTTING WON EASTER CUP HEATS EASILY

Lordship And Robin Dundee

Robin Dundee and Lordship confirmed their position as favourites for the final of the £5OOO Easter Cup on April 23 when they won their two-mile qualifying heats decisively at Addington Raceway on Saturday. Both horses were aided by a slow pace in the middle stages and their ability to accelerate quickly from the start enabled them to make up their handicaps without too much effort.

Robin Dundee began brilliantly in the third qualifying heat and had passed Swartz Pete and Van Rush before the end of half a furlong.

Cloudy Bay set a slow pace early, M. Holmes taking advantage of this to improve with Robin Dundee after five furlongs. She was in front for a short time at the end of six furlongs and a half, but a furlong later was steadied behind Waitaki Hanover. Robin Dundee moved up to Waitaki Hanover early in the run home, and from then had her rivals well covered although she won by only a neck. Mister Chips paced a sound

race for second, a length in front of Waitaki Hanover, with four lengths back to Lady Charles. Then came Fielder, Southern Song and Junior Royal. Cloudy Bay made no impression over the final two furlongs and finished tenth. Lordship completed a double worth £4 4s for £1 when he held off Wendy Dawn by a short length in the other heat. The pace was even slower in this heat, with Lordship settling down about tenth.

Lonesome Valley set ail the pace, with Lordship improving to fifth at the half-mile. D. D. Nyhan was content to wait on Lonesome Valley and Doctor Barry until the straight entrance. He soon raced past them and finished

stoutly to ■nin by a short length. Wendy Dawn raced right up to her first-night placing and got up for second, a length and a half in front of Golden Oriole, which finished on solidly. Space Cadet battled on for fourth three lengths away, two lengths in front of Doctor Barry. Great Adios, which did not pace smoothly early, made up ground for sixth, ahead of Bobbinet, which was checked at the start and last most of the way.

Happy Ending, Paddy's Day and Great Adios lost ground at the start.
