CONTROL OF PIG FARMS

Waimairi C.C. Proposal

The proposed amendment to the Waimairi County Council’s district planning scheme in no way affected existing pig farms, said the county chairman (Mr O. C. Mitchell), commenting on remarks made at a meeting of the executive of North Canterbury Federated Farmers. Mr Mitchell said it should be made clear that the council was seeking authority to regulate, or even prohibit, the establishment of more pig farms in the county, where land conditions or proximity to existing housing made this type of farming undesirable. The council considered that the proposed control was necessary in the interests of the community as a whole, said Mr Mitchell. The council was concerned that farmers might have been misled as to its intentions by the reported Federated Farmers’ discussion.

Mr A. C. Richards (Waimairi) told the farmers’ meeting that the council had such wide powers under the regulations that it could put established piggeries out of business. A sub-committee was set up to make further inquiries.
