Record Oyster Catches

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, April 6. A ’ record 40,582 sacks of oysters have been dredged from Foveaux Strait so far this season. The 19boat oyster fleet has been averaging 1268 sacks a day during the 32 days they have been out. Last season, to the end of March, 29,482 sacks had been dredged. This season has produced two monthly record hauls so far. In February 15.849 sacks were dredged, while in February last year only 7173 sacks were landed. Last month 24,733 sacks were landed, compared with 22,309 in March last year. No Talks.— The Malaysian Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, today ruled out peace talks with President Sukarno until Indonesia calls off its “crush Malaysia” camnaign.—Kuala Lumpur, April 6.

The average .daily catch of the fleet this season is 176 I sacks up on last year and the i average daily catch of each i boat is up 10 sacks from 58 I last year. Largest Returned The boats have been out on 32 days this season—l2 days in February and 20 in March. Last March the boats worked 21 days. The total catch for March is the largest returned, but in 1960. when only 12 boats were operating out of Bluff, 21,350 sacks were dredged in March.
