Riccarton Fashions Sometimes Startle

Travel was the theme of an attractive and ocasionally startling mannequin parade in the Riccarton Mall on Tuesday evening.

Models of assorted ages and sizes gave an indication of the very large range of coats, suits, shifts, cocktail wear, and evening gowns available from the local stores. Three “beautiful Plunket children,” Julie, Leslie and Bruce, gave the mothers in the audience a good idea of children’s high fashion garments. Bobby Brooks had something for the moderns—two suits, one in moss green and one in mustard, with pleated skirts and checked tops complemented by identical checked stockings. Avenger Coat An Emma Peel-Inspired coat won admiring glances from young and old alike. It was in a brilliant red, widerimmed, foam-backed corduroy with a high Chinese collar and a row a brass buttons slightly off centre. It was finished with a hipster belt and gold buttons. There was also an up-to-the-minute raincoat fashioned on the trench coat pattern in gleaming black alligator with brass buttons.

Among the sports wear a teamed outfit in purple and violet caught the eye. The trews were in the harlequinpatterned purple and violet

diamond checks and finished with a purple sweater. Another outfit looked very suitable for car racing. The slim black slacks were matched with a Ferrari red sweater which had black and white checks on the border. This was worn with a simulated short fur coat which is quite the latest in overseas ski wear. Cocktail and evening wear glittered with sequins and flowing chiffon but practicality was not neglected and a washable evening gown in a floral cotton fabric was also shown. About 500 people attended the parade which was sponsored by the Riccarton Mall Merchants’ Association. Proceeds will be donated to the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society. (
