Closer Agreement On Air Fares
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 6. Canadian Pacific Airlines executive, Mr Hugh Main, left Auckland yesterday “very encouraged” over talks with Air New Zealand on fares.
An earlier criticism by Air New Zealand of C.P.A.’s announcement that it was seeking fare cuts of between 20 and 40 per cent between Auckland and Vancouver, statements from tiie two airlines yesterday indicated closer agreement. Initially, Air New Zealand said that it was surprised at the announcement as fares agreed on between airlines and Governments were to run until March, 1967, and that it had agreed to discuss the subject in September. Before Exodus Asked why C.PA. wanted to move now, Mr Main said this would allow the fares to be settled before the tourist exodus from North America during t h e next (northern) winter. Otherwise airlines would have to wait until the
next winter—lB months away —before being able to “cash in.” He said other talks would follow. The New Zealand director of Panam, Mr W. Rolph, said his airline would welcome talks with other carriers on fares but thought the best place for talks was at a meeting of the International Air Transport Association.
