Our Smokey Takes Greymouth Leg

Our Smokey, a dual winner at Nelson in January, regained winning form in the Lamplough Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at Greymouth last night. Our Smokey, which is raced in partnership by his Springston trainer, J. R. Carter, and Mr B. N. Woodgate, had a perfect run behind the pacemaker, John, for most of the race. F. E. Newfield worked him out to challenge near the straight entrance and he was a clear leader inside the last furlong. Our Smokey won by two lengths from Thunderdina which beat Lornaway by a length. Both minor placegetters had been handily placed all the way. Torpi, the outsider of 12, was the best of the others.

The second leg of the main double, the Golden Coast Handicap, went to the Meth-ven-trained Allakasam, which came with a brilliant late run to wear down Quality Inn. Quality Inn joined the pacemaker, Michael, on the home turn, looked in for a win inside the last furlong but failed to cope with Allakasam’s strong finish. Michael lost third to Wee Lord, which received the run of the race to the straight. The Our Smokey-Allakasam combination paid £9O for £l. The on-course double, Overtime and Blue Pin, paid £7O Ils for £l. On-course the totalisator handled £14,851 10s, including £1703 on the double, against £28,781 last year.
