Decision For Employers

(N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS, April 4.

The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. W. Armstrong) has given a decision in favour of the management in the Whakatu freezing works’ dispute.

The dispute concerning two departments kept the works idle for six working days last month. The Whakatu Freezing Workers’ Union and the man-

agement of the Hawke's Bay Farmers’ Meat Company, then agreed to refer the dispute to Mr Armstrong and accept his decision as final. A second question referred to the calling out of freezing chamber hands for Saturday work.

After a hearing Mr Armstrong reseived his decision. His findings, given today, were:

Do circumstances exist in the Whakatu casing sheds that would warrant payment to workers in excess of those rates provided in the award? —No.

Is not the employer entitled to select the number of men required for overtime work and expect that his request in this regard should be complied with?—Yes.
