Lone Runner In Rain
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. Cold weather with rain in the afternoon continued to plague the Auckland runner, John Young yesterday as he continued his run from Stirling Point, Bluff to Cape Reinga. At Henley, 20 miles south of Dunedin where he finished yesterday’s 44-mile stage. Young said the cold had been “getting to him.” Young started 12 miles south of Balclutha at 6 a.m. and arrived at Henley at 6.15 p.jn., running without company. Today he will face one of the most hilly sections of the route when he takes to the road at 6 a.m. He expects to be in Dunedin about lunchtime and finish the day about five miles south of Waikouaiti. Ace At Hokitika The highlight of the Hokitika Golf Club’s week-end activities was a hole-in-one by A. Nicol. Using a 7 iron at the 120-yard fourteenth hole, Nicol landed the ball about eight inches in front of the hole, hit the pin on the first bounce, dropped on the lip and fell into the cup. Sanders Again Doug Sanders calmly stroked in a five-foot putt for a par on the second hole of a sudden death play-off with Tom Weiskopf to win the 100,000-dollar Greensboro golf tournament on Sunday. The two ended the 72-hale tournament on an eight-under-par 276. Both had final rounds of 70. The New Zealand lefthander, R. J. Charles, carded a final round of 72 to finish in a six-way tie for twentyfirst place on 284. Charles won 953 dollars. ■ A week ago Sanders won I the Jacksonville Open. This
season he has also won the Bob Hope Desert Classic. The defending champion, Sam Snead, eight times winner of the Greensboro Open, finished with a 71 for 285 total. Title Slipping The Wimbome St. Giles Dorset soccer team made a mistake on Sunday. It won. And with victory went the team’s proud boast that it had lost every league match it had played in the last three and a half years. The side —called “the worst team in Britain" —beat the
classes 12in upright and the 13in underhand. Grading System The New Zealand Squash Rackets Association has replaced the existing handicapping system with a system of 11 grades—Al. A2, 81, 82, Cl, C2, DI, D2, El, E2, F. After May 1 all tournament entries will have to be accompanied by a grading. Mr L. G. Milne and Mrs R. Woodhead have been appointed Christchurch statisticians. Rugby Round-up A half-back to replace the retired D. Connor is the major problem the Auckland Rugby selector, Mr R. Sorenson, is facing this season. “Besides being an exceptionally fine half-back, Connor was also vice-captain. His position is not going to be easily filled,” Mr Sorenson said. The Northland and New Zealand Maoris half-back, S. Going, suffered a cracked collarbone when playing for the Vikings against Colin Meads’ Invitation XV at Dargaville on Saturday. Vikings won, 27-23. A special old boys’ Rugby game,, in which several Alli Blacks will take part, will be' held on May 4 to mark the' 70th anniversary of the Auck-; land Grammar School-King’s; College Ist XV matches. . In a closely fought match Mac Ewen’s XV beat McCaskie’s XV, 6-5, in an invitation charity game at Woodville on Sunday.
