First Game In Nelson I i Five of last year's Junior National Cup side will form the nucleus of the Canterbury under-18 soccer team to open its representative season at Nelson on Easter Monday. One of these, the Western senior player, D. Almond, will captain the team, and the other four are D. Phillips, T. I Wilson, D. Tullett and M. ; Smith. , The team, announced by the 'selector (Mr R. Storer), is:— Phillips (Shirley 8.H.5.); |G. Adams (Rangers), T. Wilson (Shamrock): A. Pickrill (Christchurch 8.H.5.), Almond (Western), W. Smith (Western): J. McLennan ■ (Technical). Tullett (Shamrock), G. Davis (New Brighton), S. McAlpine (H. 5.0.8. R. Williams (Christchurch 8.H.5.). Reserve: M. Smith (Technical). Stuart McAlpine will be the third of his family to have played representative under--18 soccer, following in the footsteps of his brothers, Angus and lan. The big incentive for the team again this year will be an entry in the Australian youth tournament. In 1964, when Canterbury won the Junior National Cup for the first time, the team was allowed to enter the Australian tournament when it was played in Adelaide.
