Tangible Support For Fishermen
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 4. Napier fishermen who stopped work on Friday had received financial support in their dispute over pay and working conditions, the secretary of the Napier Fishermen’s Union (Mr C. W. Armstrong) said today.
The crew of the freighter Abel Tasman, which left Napier on Saturday, had made a donation, as had the Wellington Fishermen’s Union, Mr Armstrong said. Telegrams of support had also been received from the Gisborne and Auckland Fishermen’s Unions, and the Auckland Seamen’s Union.
The Napier fishermen decided on Friday morning not to man vessels until the employers agreed to meet union representatives. The Napier Boat Owners' Association said that it considered local trawler crews were being adequately -rewarded and it would not meet the fishermen’s demands. The Napier union has referred the dispute to the Federation of Labour.
