INFILTRATION
CN.Z. Press Association— Copyright) SAIGON, April 4. North Vietnamese regulars—perhaps as many as 25,000 —have infiltrated recently into South Vietnam’s northernmost province of Quang Tri, according to United Press International.
The new concentration of Communist troops is believed to be a main reason for stepped-up American 852 bombing of the area. The disclosure came a day after news that United States troops had pursued Viet Cong forces across the South Vietnamese border into Cambodia for the first time.
The reported North Vietnamese build-up in Quang Tri followed a concerted United States Marine drive —named Operation Texas—to cripple the Communists’ supply route in the border province. Growing Force
852 s had been trying to knock out Communist supply dumps. Now their chief aim is killing the North Vietnamese.
Military experts said that the current North Vietnamese force in the south numbers about 45,000. The United States troops crossed into neutral Cambodia after Communist forces shelled an American command post from Cambodian territory. United States artillery fired back across the border with a heavy barrage, and warplanes
pounded a Communist bunker system in the Cambodian frontier area.
