Parking On Hills

Sir, —I think a correction should be made to the latest “She Says.” Although generally excellent, this article has made one slip. It is stated that cars should be left in reverse when parked on. a hill. This is correct if the car is facing downhill. However, if the car is facing uphill, the car should be left in forward gear.—Yours, etc., DAVID COLEMAN.

April 1, 1966. (Our motoring correspondent replies: “ ‘She’ is quite correct. In nearly * all cars reverse is a lower gear than first, and hence will hold the car better whether it is pointing up or downhill. A car left in a high first gear On a steep hill can still move: the engine is ‘driven’ by the car. and runs backwards. The correspondent could verify this by experiment.”]
