Labour Party Policy
Sir, —One has to possess a microscopic vision to detect and confirm the assertion made by “F.W.P.F.” that “there is one fundamental difference between the policy of the National Party and that of the Labour Party,” and that the Labour Party stands “square behind the policy of the socialisation of the means of production, distribution, and exchange." It would be highly interesting if the correspondent would furnish evidence of this postulation. To assume that socialism is achieved by “fattening up” and nurturing private enterprise, presenting a degree of indifference to the growth of monopolies with resultant living costs, suggests that the party leadership ceases to take itself seriously as far as its supporters are concerned.—Yours etc., D.H.C. March 24, 1966.
Sir, —I will agree with “F.W.P.F.” that there is a fundamental difference between Labour and National, but Labour believes in private enterprise. Which Government brought in family benefit homes and rehabilitation for returned men? The Labour Party is against protecting monopolised industry, which this Government has done in the fertiliser works and other industries. If we had Labour in we would be building a co-operative fertiliser works, but this Government deliberately laid down tough conditions for canvassing that were never asked of any other co-operative works. If that is not protecting monopolies, what is? The only reason the farmers want a co-operative works is to create competition.—Yours, etc., COMPETITION. March 24, 1966.
