MICROWAVE LINK

Resumption Today

The new microwave telephone system linking Christchurch with the North Island will come back into service today. It will increase the number of circuits by 50 and minimise delays in calls during business hours. The Post Office’s regional engineer in Christchurch (Mr H. W- Wilkinson) said yesterday that the microwave link would be permanent, with the reservation that it would be withdrawn at week-ends to enable engineers to make essential tests.

All testing, he said, should be completed in about two months. As soon as the link between Christchurch and Dunedin was completed, there would be almost no delays in calls to the North Island. Mr Wilkinson said the Dunedin section was due for completion next June or July, and this would give Dunedin subscribers their own direct link to the North Island. Until then, they would have to borrow circuits from Christchurch from time to time.

Commenting on the new Harewood exchange, Mr Wilkinson said present planning indicated that it would be in operation about mid-May. This, however, was still subject to confirmation. “Construction is right up to schedule,” he said.
