Sir, —Your leader contains more personal abuse than facts regarding de Gaulle’s action of withdrawal. Two important reversals of United States experts’ advice have occurred since April 4, 1949. “The German General Staff must be utterly destroyed.” (General Eisenhower). The N.A.T.O. strategy of the Pentagon has now resulted in West German nuclear ambitions being achieved with a former Nazi general holding a key military position in N.A.T.O. After Korea, General McArthur advised against future Asian commitments, and these, in which Europe has no voice, increase the French doubt that United States would risk nuclear war to defend Europe because it involves the destruction of United States cities. Hitler’s successful onslaught on the former entente was primarily due to the West’s fear of social change in not accepting the Russian proposals, and your “Not again” could apply to the biggest, best-equipped military machine in Western Europe the Bundeswehr— Yours, etc., WEST WIND March 21, 1966.
