Air Pollution
Sir, —The comparison of smog between London and Christchurch as raised by Mr Neary is of passing interest only. As an engineer and interested in air pollution, he should be aware that in georaphic and climatic conditions we are similar to Los Angeles. This latter city has a far greater smog nuisance than Christchurch, yet it burns little or no coal. The cause has been traced to the internal combustion engine. The proposed motorways in our city and suburbs are being made necessary by the ever-increas-in numbers of motor vehicles It is from this source that the greatest tnreat to the cleanliness of our air will come in the future. As Mr Neary made no mention of this problem, could he tell us how this nuisance is to be eliminated? —Yours, etc. C. A. BERRY. March 22, 1966.
