BACK TO CITY
Big Student Exodus
The Christchurch suburbs of Fendalton and Ham received a taste of things to come yesterday when science students went to Ilam for the first time for lectures—and then had to return to the city site for laboratory classes because buildings were not completed. Streets round the Ilam campus were crammed with parked cars, big groups of students on motor-cycles, scooters, and bicycles poured on to the suburban streets when the time came to move, and bus stops i the area had unusually large queues. The Vice-Chancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) told the University Council in the afternoon that he deeply regretted the necessity for science classes “split” between the central and Ham sites. He said the Transport Board had been informed when new peaks of traffic might be expected. Dr. Pownall spent 90 minutes at Ilam yesterday ensuring the best arrangements in the circumstances. He said that in spite of the difficulties of uncompleted buildings and workmen still on the job, staff and students were taking everything philosophically.
