Rescued By Team-mates
A fast, efficient rescue by three members of the Canterbury swimming team saved the life of one of their fellow competitors, Therese Jones, aged 15, in a dumping surf off Marine Parade, Napier, on Sunday.
Miss Jones was concussed when hit by two heavy breakers while swimming in the sea with other members of the Ctotectary teem. Her plight was noticed quickly by the team’s captain, W. R. Williamson, who, with B. M. Mustehin, swam out to the spot where she was floating, partly submerged. W. P.
Brown joined in the rescue operation and the three swimmers brought Miss Jones to the shore; a task made dangerous by the heavy surf. At the team’s hotel, Brown and Williamson applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until an ambulance arrived to take the injured swimmer to Napier Hospital.
The team had to leave Napier on Sunday night but before the departure Miss Jones had recovered consciousness. Her condition is satisfactory and it is expected that she will be discharged today. The team’s chaperone, Mrs E. Luscombe, stayed in Napier and will accompany Miss Jones back to Christchurch. -
