The Victorian all-rounder, G. Watson, aged 20, may have clinched a place in the Australian team for South Africa after his performance in a Sheffield Shield match against South Australia yesterday. Watson took six for 61 with his medium pace deliveries. On Saturday he scored 80.

South Australia’s last seven wickets fell for 50 runs, and the side made 306 in its first innings in reply to Victoria’s 548 for six declared. Only I. Cunningham (95) and N. Dansie (81) batted confidently.

South Australia followed on and at the close was 106 without loss. One day’s play remains. Scores: Victoria 548/6 dec., v. South Australia 306 (I. Cunningham 95, Dansie 81; G. Watson 6/61) and 106/0 (L. Flavell 61 not out).
