Bowls Champions Ousted By Amberley Unknowns

The title-holders, C. D. McGarry and N. Lash (Carlton) were eliminated from the national bowls pairs championships when they were beaten by an unknown Amberley pair, B. P. McManus and W. Gregory, at the Woolston green before a handful of spectators yesterday.

McManus and Gregory, who had not played together until the national tournament, fully deserved their win. For most of the match they had outdrawn the champions and on the vital 20th head Gregory, the lead, matched Lash’s first bowl which sat on the kitty by moving Lash’s bowl an inch or so to leave his nestling against the kitty.

Lash and McGarry tried hard to draw off the shot bowl but they missed each time by inches and McManus and Gregory won 22-15.

If McGarry and Lash had managed to get the four of five points they needed on the head it would have finished off a remarkable day for them. In the first round they were down 10-13 against L. V. Foley (Wanganui) but scored 14 more points to win 24-16. In their next game they made an even more remarkable recovery. After being down 19-10 against A. McDonald (Taeri) on the fourteenth head they won 25-20. Gregory, a policeman at Waikari. and McManus only joined the Amberley club to try to promote interest in bowls in the Waikari district, where they hope to lay down a green. They won their next game against R. J. Rickerby (Riccarton Racecourse) 21-20 and will be in the public eye at Opawa today. GOOD COMPANY However, McGarry and Lash were in quite good company today. The remaining twolifers, A. J. Rudduck (Meadowbank), R. L. Park (Carltori) and E. W. Grimman (Caversham) gained their place at the expense of some highly-regarded bowlers. Among the crowned heads to fall today were A. Govorko (Te Puke), who lost successive games, and J. H. Rabone (Auckland), who lost his lives today at the Canterbury green. There are 26 one-lifers, imong them some dangerous opponents. W. P. O’Neill and G. Gifford (Carlton) after an uncertain start played superbly to win their last three games. J. N. S. Flett and S. W. Jolly (Point Chevalier), W H. Hampton (Nae Nae), P. C. Skoglund and K. Wing (Palmerston North) are just a few of the one-lifers who will be dangerous opponents. BURNT HEAD O’Neill fully earned his name of “Bomber Billy” on the St. Martins green during a tense match against L. Devereux (Kaikorai). Trailing 9-15, the Carlton pair had not been very happy, with O’Neill being the weak link. But when the pressure was on he responded magnificently. A oerfect draw shot brought four points and on the next head he boomed up two drives which took a shot bowl and then burnt the head. On the last head an accurate drive scored two. At the Cashmere green those two happy souls, the former leading jockeys, V. J Sellars and W. J. Broughton, kept their one life with a delicate drawing and in the final round there they beat Craig (Canterbury) 21-16. On their way they also beat the redoubtable G. Jolly (Leith) Their felicitous touch brought them many points as bowls clustered around the kitty and when Sellars tried one drive it had the Midas touch) off-line it clipped a wing bowl and turned a bad shot into four points. Some of the most spectacular play of the day was at the Opawa Green, where R. J. Andrew displayed some of the most fierce driving of the tournament. Against K. Murray (Opawa) he repeatedly smashed up Murray’s fine drawing. One drive produced a quaint incident. The kitty rebounded 30 feet back up the green. Murray, faced With a kitty about 12 feet away, played a “toucher.” Andrews calmly smashed the kitty back to the other end. AGGRESSIVE SHOTS In his game against D. McKenzie (Milton) Andrew lost narrowly but he displayed some aggressive shots and once when he burnt the head he sent the kitty scuttling away past four other rinks. Govorko was in commanding form in the morning but he was unable to match the precise play of Grimman and then lost his next game to depart. Grimman then continued to achieve a notable double by beating Flett. Flett and Jolly had been playing well in the early rounds but this time their touch seemed to desert- them and often they were short on the draw shot. But this pleasant and very skilful pair will i still be a potent force today Rabone was well and truly beaten by R. Park (Kiibirnie) to lose his first life. His drives were inaccurate; he could not match the sharp drawing of Park and then was beaten by R H. Cowies (Ashbury).

SUBTLE DRAWING Skoglund lost his first life at the Edgeware green when his lead. K. Wing, was not able to match the subtle drawing of the Carlton lead. It is the first national tournament for the Park brothers, who are both in their twenHowever, away from the hurly-burly of the two-lifers with their large galleries there were many interesting and tense matches. G. P. Thomas (Elmwood) was leading 17-0 after 10

heads against W. W. Mundy (Kaituna) but suddenly the game was 19-19 and Thomas finally held the shot on the last head to win, 20-19. J. G. Daniel (Waikanae) and R. Hartley (St. Albans) had a battle royal at Elmwood as the score changed from 2-10 to 23-18 before Daniel won on the last head by 23-22. Because of the heavy overnight rain play was postponed for two hours. When play began at 10.30 a.m. the greens were quite heavy and most of the play took part on short ends. As the sun and wind dried the greens ends quickly became longer. However, at the end of the day the easterly wind again plagued the players, who were not able to adjust their play to another demand.
