COPPER EXPORT
Government May Act
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) CANBERRA, Nov. 25.
The Australian Government was considering action to ban the “highly profitable” export of virgin copper converted to “scrap.” the Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr J. McEwen, said yesterday.
He said that by converting virgin copper to scrap, exporters could make a profit of £75 a ton. He warned that the Government must take a “prompt look” at the situation.
Mr McEwen was replying to questions in the House of Representatives. World prices for copper have risen very sharply in recent months.
Mr McEwen said that the domestic price for No. I scrap copper today was £470 a ton, compared to the virgin copper of £395 a ton.
