Fulbright Sour To Australians
(N Z. Press Association-Copyright)
CANBERRA, Nov. 25.
The chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator William Fulbright, began his brief Australian visit on a sour note today.
In an airport interview he referred to “Australia’s very small contingent in Vietnam.” Senator Fulbright is leading a Senate delegation of observ-
ers to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference in Wellington.
They will leave for New Zealand on Monday. Senator Fulbright carefully avoided most questions on the ground that when abroad he did not deal off the cuff with controversial subjects. He said he was not aware of Australia’s commitment in Vietnam although he did know that Australia was supporting the American position with a very small contingent. Reporters told him that there were more than 1000 Australian troops in Vietnam When he answered: “We have 160,000,” a reporter said that Australia’s effort was comparable in terms of population.
Senator Fulbright is accompanied by Senator Bourke Hickenlooper. Senator Frank Moss and Senator Hiram Fong.
