State Rentals

Sir, —Would the Public Service Association, through Mr Tucker, give a public reply to the following query? Now

that public servants receive “market” salaries, why all the objections to paying what will be about 60 per cent of market rents?—Yours, etc., A PUBLIC SERVANT.

November 19, 1965. [The president of the Public Service Association (Mr W. E. B. Tucker) replies: “Only some 5000 of New Zealand’s 42,000 public servants occupy departmental houses. The majority of these are in isolated areas or attached to government works or institutions. In similar circumstances it is common practice for employers to provide housing rent-free, or at nominal rents. Official statistics show that 34,000 houses are provided free of rent by private employers.”]
