LOCAL BODY SERVICE

Retirement By Rotation (From Our Own Reporter) HOKITIKA, Nov. 5. Retirement from local bodies by rotation was discussed by the South Island Local Bodies’ Association yesterday. The Hokitika Borough Council proposed in a remit that the various local authority associations be asked to consider the principle; and the conference agreed to this. Mr H. J. Richards (Hokitika) said the system operated in some countries such as Australia and the United States, and an example would be a term of four years, with an election every two years for half the councillors. “This would aliow for the smoother running of local authority affairs without the possibility of complete changes of personnel without previous administrative experience so necessary to the economic running of public affairs,” Mr Richards said. “An alternative would be that under the present three-year term one-third of the council could retire each year.”
