Service Recognised

We report this morning an unusual benefaction and an even more unusual reluctant beneficiary. Mr R. E. James and his sister, Miss Florence Lillian James, sent the Christchurch Fire Brigade a cheque for £lOO in appreciation of the brigade’s services in a fire at their home. The board’s social club has decided it cannot accept the gift, and Mr James and his sister have taken up the club’s suggestion that the cheque be given to the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation. The elderly well-wishers of the fire brigade have drawn attention to a public service too often taken for granted; and the firemen have shown they regard their occupation as more than a means of earning a living.
