“PAGEANT OF ASIA”
City Man Did Not Walk Out A report that he had walked out of the Pageant of Asia at the Sydney Trades Fair before the finish was not correct, said the president of the Canterbury Progress League (Mr G. R. Burrowes). Mr Burrowes said the report had it he had walked out before the finish because he thought the pageant was so poor. “This statement is definitely incorrect and it can be proved beyond doubt that I remained with the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce party until the end, and then returned to the social room. “At no time had I any intention of leaving before the finish. Whatever my views of the pageant were, such an act on my part would in any case have been both rude and ungracious to my hosts. My other remarks as reported are correct: through distance from the stand to the arena the acts appeared too small, and I did not understand the Asian music. “What I also said and, regrettably, this was not reported —was my praise of a few of the acts, and in particular that the Maori act with its rhythm and beautiful music in my opinion stole the show. The tremendous applause of the audience certainly gave evidence of this.”
