Student Union Approved

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 4. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) has given Auckland university students approval for the £55,000 student union 53,000 sq. ft. block.

He also told the university building committee that there would be no delay in Government' consideration of the £l3 million library building, plans for which will go to Wellintgon within the next few days. He made the announcement on the student union building after a two-minute talk with the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella). A delighted students’ president, Mr R. Mountain, assured the Prime Minister his association would have £114,000 for the building bynext March. “We are confident we can raise the rest by loan,” said Mr Mountain. Mr Holyoake: I hope so. We

may be able to give some assistance.

The long-planned student building will go on a site next to the planned university library.

In touring the students’ quarters today, the Prime Minister wrinkled his nose at the smell from the shower and toilet section. He was fulfilling a promise he made in April to inspect the premises.

Mr Holyoake reminded students that the Government’s building programming was designed to give everybody a fair chance and to stop spiralling costs. The major problem was the shortage of skilled men in the building trade to do all the work demanded.
