N.Z. Cup And Derby Rivals In Eight-Sided Gallop

An eight-sided gallop in which six New Zealand Cup horses and two Derby colts took part was one of the features of training at Riccarton yesterday. Galloping took place 40 feet out on the course proper, which provided excellent footing. The horses involved, which will be rivals in the rich twomiler tomorrow, were Eiffel Tower (W. J. Hillis), Alaska (M. B. Andrews), Carlynn (R. C. Smith), Midnight Kiss (F. R. Beguley), Birthright (W. H. Beck), and Marlow (G. Gullery). The three-year-olds were Summer Magic (E. J. Didham) and Middy (J. A. Messent).

The group broke away near the mile and a-quarter and Carlynn and Midnight Kiss quickly took over the pacemaking. They led into the last mile from Eiffel Tower and Summer Magic, then Alaska, Birthright and Marlow in line with Middy in a small gap at the rear. They kept up a steady Usee to the furlong along the back and around to the half-mile before the pace was increased. From there they ran home in 50 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 37 4-ssec. At the post Carlynn led Midnight Kiss by a neck. Lorastan (F. H. Skelton), which had

joined in on the home turn. Eiffel Tower. Middy and Summer Magic were about half a length back and almost in line. Alaska, Marlow and Birthright were closely grouped behind. Carlynn, a Te Rapa stayer noted for his ability on lefthanded tracks, ran the last mile in Imin 47 l-ssec. The Riccarton horseman, G. W. Mein, has been engaged to ride Carlynn in the cup. Sprint honours during the morning went to the Stewards’ Handicap, rivals. Scramble and Tumble. They sped home from the half-mile together in 48 2-ssec, the last three furlongs In 36 2-ssec. Tumble had his race rider. A. H. Eastwood, up and Scramble was ridden by C. A. Bowry. This smart Levintrained sprinter will be ridden by A. T. Jones tomorrow. Kalott <A. H. Eastwood) showed to better advantage than her Welcome Stakes rival. Blue Chip (D. N. Hadfield) in their run from the half-mile. Kalott took 49sec and won by three lengths. Trial Offer (C. A. Bowry) took 49 2-ssec to run home from the half-mile and finished well clear of Castle Flight (E. G. Low) whose saddle slipped back- The Stewards' Handicap top-weight worked well. Shoshone (A. J. Stokes) led Corsica <W. Traecey) by a length at the end of half a mile in Slsec. z Marlborough (K. Hobson) was shading Newbrook (W. Traecey) after nine furlongs in Imin 58 2-ssec. The first five furlongs took Imin 3 4-ssec—the fastest part of the gallop. Smart Over Six Shipmate (A. J. Stokes) took imin 16sec to run six furlongs, the 1 stfour in 50 2-ssec. He will be a strong local hope for Stewards’ Handicap honours. Standout (B. D. Collins) seemed to have the edge on Hushaway (A. J. Stokes) at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 31sec, the last half-mile in 51 l-ssec. Pango (R. Moir) ran her halfmile In 49 3-ssec. This smart My Pal filly will rate on the later days of the cup meeting. Sir Limond (E. G. Low) was a length in front of Approval (R. P. Register) and We’U Find Out (R. L. Browning) after six furlongs in Imin 18 2-ssec, the final half-mile in 52sec. Carnbeg <C. A. Aitken) and Lady Dilemma (R. Mudgway) sped over the first two furlongs of six in 24 4-ssec, but eased at the end of the gallop, which took Imin 17 2-ssec. Pharasal (B. D. Collins) and Court (A. J. Stokes) showed they were fit Spring Plate rivals by dashing home from the halfmile together in 49 4-ssec. Bastille (E. J. Didham) and Flying York (M. J. Wildermoth) took imin 19 l-ssec to run in from the six furlongs, the last four in 51 4-s«ec. Count de Seine (W. Traecey) and Blue Seas (K. Hobson) were partnered over seven fur longs in imin 32 l-ssec, the last half-mile in 53sec. Bellarook (D. N. Hadfield) took 50s 3-ssec for his half-mile. He will try for this third Stewards’ Handicap win tomorrow Tax Evader (E. G. Low) and Howe Good IK. A. Aitken) were together at the end of a mile in Imin 47 3-ssec, the final half in 52 2-ssec. Evenly Matched Bravo (C. A. Bowry), Otherwise (P. Ryall) and Filspar (A. J. Stokes) were evenly matched over five furlongs. They took Imin 3sec and came home from the half-mile in 50 4-ssec. Devastation (C. T. W*H»on) and Misjudge (A. H. Eastwood) were much too good for Sir Robert (A. J. Stokes) at the end of a mile. Devastation and Misjudge pulled right away in the run home and beat the New Zealand Cup light-weight by lengths. Their time for the mile was Imin 4S 3-ssec and the final half took 50 4-ssec. Running Scared (P. J. Daly) and Gunga Din <P. Williams) took Imin 22 2-ssec to run seven furlongs, th* final half mile in 54sec.

Pretentious <R. Meir) led Aconite (J. A. Messent) by half a length after running in front the half-mile in 51 2-ssec. Waverley IN. T. Cowles) and Prince Callan (C. McDonald) kept together throughout a mite in train 46 2-ssee, the final half taking 52 4-s‘sec. Double Fair (D. N. Hadfield) and Rich Light (A. Telfer) were abreast after tunning from the half-mile in 53sec. Surgaway <C. T. Wilson) and Town Talk (D. Tucker) took imin 18 l-ssec for their six furlongs, the last half-mile in 52 l-ssec. Golden Melody (A. Telfer) showed good pace for a jumper to run her first two furlongs in 25 3-ssec and complete six in Imin 17 2-ssec. She is a New Zealand Cup light-weight. Muddling Gallop Kintyre (E. G. Lbw) and Carnmor (A. H. Eastwood) were partnered in a fast but muddling gallop. To the displeasure of their trainer, T, G. Stokes, both took turns at pacemaking. —Stokes had intended to have Kintyre lead all the way and Let Carnmor do the chasing. But the latter set most of the pace, although Kintyre passed him in the last few strides to win going away by a length. They still managed six furlongs in Imin 15 l-ssee and ran from the half-mile in 56 2-ssec. Terrific (F. Beguely) worked at three-quarter pace from the mile until the three furlongs and then sprinted home in 38 I-s®ec. He will be one of the strong fancies for the New Zealand Derby. Panace (E. G. Low) took 51 1-5 sec to run from the half-mile. Talic (G. W. Mein) started with him, but was eased after a furlong; He has been sore and is an unljkely starter in the Welcome Stakes. JRoyal Bid (F. H. Skelton) was galloping easily and shading Tracy's Comet (Mrs Clutterbuck) at the end of their mile in Imin 50 3-ssec, the final half In 53 2-ssec. The New Zealand Cup top-weight was not set to record time. Hunting Horn (G. W. Mein) and Hayman (A. Telfer) were partnered over six furlongs in Imin 19 3-Ssec. The first three furlongs in 39 2-ssec was the fastest part of the gallop. Dunsun <E. G. Low) was a neck ahead of Polar (E. Gye) after sprinting from the three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. Gold Shower (F. H. Skelton) and May Wyne (J. A. Messent) took 51 l-ssec to run from the half-mile. ■ Seminole (B. Edens) showed to advantage for the second time this week when she beat Danny Kaye (A. J. Stokes) by a length after running from the half-mile in 49 4-ssec.
