Failure To Follow Up Missions

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 4. Export salesmen were badly needed by New Zealand, Mr N. P. Mortimer, former manager of the Cook Islands Trading Company, said in Auckland today.

The company has five stores and is the largest trading concern in the Cook Islands.

It sells mainly New Zealand goods, the equal of most

overseas lines, according to Mr Mortimer. “New Zealand shirts are the best in the world,” he said, on his return to Auckland in the Mariposa. “New Zealand jandals were a lot dearer than the Hong Kong ones, but the Maoris bought them because they lasted five times as long. “But,” said Mr Mortimer, “I had to get down on my knees to get New Zealand firms to send me stuff. We've got good products, but we don’t get out and sell.” The idea of sending trade missions overseas was a good one, but there too New Zealand firms fell down, Mr Mortimer said, because they did not send salesmen to follow up the initial work of the missions.
