STATE FUNERAL FOR DR. EVATT

CANBERRA, Nov. 4. Dr. Herbert Vere Evatt, a former President of the United Nations’ General Assembly, was accorded a State funeral in Canberra today. Dr. Evatt, a former High Court Judge, Federal Minister
I and leader of the Australian I Labour Party, died on TuesIday, aged 71. Mourners at the service, held at the picturesque Church of St. John the Baptist, included the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, and Dame Pattie Menzies, the Governor - General, Lord Casey, and Lady Casey, and many people who had worked with Dr. Evatt during his long legal and political career. Hundreds of people gathered outside the church to hear the service broadcast over loudspeakers. The Right Rev. K. J. Clements. Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn, told the mourners that Dr. Evatt had been tirelessly devoted to the greatest causes—literature, law, defence of personal liberties, social justice and the security of Australia in its hour of greatest danger. Dr. Evatt had the vision of a world free from war. Bishop Clements said. His work was recognised when he was made President of the United Nations' General Assembly in 1948. Dr. Evatt was later buried at the Canberra cemetery.
