Royal Commission “Ridiculous”

LUSAKA (Zambia), Nov. 4. The Zimbabwe African People’s Union, an exiled Rhodesian political party, yesterday condemned as “ridiculous” the proposal that a Roval Commission be set up to solve the Rhodesian crisis, the “New York Times” reported.
The party, whose leader, Mr Joshua Nkomo, is under detention in Rhodesia, issued a statement in Lusaka saying that it opposed the 1961 Constitution as a basis for introducing majority rule. It called for a referendum under British supervision, on the basis of one-man, one-vote, to prove that Africans rejected the present constitution. If this is rejected, Britain should suspend the constitution and take over the country’s administration, by force if necessary, the party declared.
The party criticised the British Government’s pressure on Africans to accept the constitution, noting that in 1961
when the Labour Party was in opposition, it supported the Africans’ refusal to implement it.
