Eyrewell Forest

Sir, —It alarms me to think that anyone could seriously consider the conversion of Eyrewell forest into farmland in view of the fantastic contribution that forestry is now making to the gross national income of this country. In the last year forest products comprised 75 per cent of our exports to Australia and this figure promises to rise dramatically. Furthermore, last year, when a survey was taken on an average for the North Island, it was found that while farming contributed £l7 per acre per annum, forestry was contributing £4O towards the gross national product. Also figures for the processed timber show that pulp returns £BO and paper £126 per acre per annum. In addition to this, farming employs one man for every 197 acres while forestry employs one man for every 96 acres, and gives employment to 31,000 people. In view of this evidence I feel that only an act bordering on lunacy would hand over land with such a potential to agriculture.—Yours, etc. GUS RAIDER. Rotorua, November 4, 1965.
