DROWNED IN AVON

Four-Year-Old Girl A four-year-old girl was drowned in the Avon river near the junction of Avonside drive and Wainoni late yesterday afternoon. She; was Alison van der Haven, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. van der Haven, of 77 Avondale road.

The child fell into deep, stagnant water in the old river-bed which runs in a loop on the east side of Kerrs Reach.

A 15-year-old boy, Gary Chalmers, of 920 Avonside Drive, jumped into the river and pulled the girl from the water. She was about threequarters of a mile from her home. His mother, Mrs R. C. Chalmers, attempted to revive the girl. A fireman, who lives near where she was found, and a doctor were applying resuscitation when a St. John ambulance arrived. The ambulance continued attempts to revive her with oxygen and other artificial aids, and doctors at the Christchurch Hospital worked on the child for an hour without success.
