Hundred At Home

(New Zealand Press Association)

HAMILTON, Nov. 3.

John Frederick Vercoe left his bed in Waikato Hospital this afternoon to go home to celebrate his hundredth birthday. For two hours he was joined at his Hillcrest road home by members of his family. Mr Vercoe broke a hip in a fall five weeks ago. The last time he was in hospital was in 1902.

At the party Mr Vercoe supervised the opening of a gallon jar of whisky—for nine years saved for his one hundredth birthday.

Mr Verco is determined to be up and about for his next birthday.

“No more hospital for me,” he said. "They’ve al) been very nice to me but I prefer to be out In the sun.”
