SVETLANA BERIOSOVA AGAIN ENCHANTING

Svetlana Beriosova was once more enchanting when, with her partner, Karl Musil, she danced a divertissement from Petipa's “Don Quixote” during last night's performance by the New Zealand Ballet. She was both charming and awe-inspiring. Her dancing "en pointe” drew gasps of amazement from the audience, and the grace of all her movements was enthralling. Karl Musil enhanced his reputation as a splendid partner and a soloist of tremendous ability. The programme was substantially the same as on the first night, but the soloists in “Swan Lake" were Marilyn Burr and Jean-Paul Comelin They are accustomed to dancing together and show great sensitivity and technical ability of a high order. The

work of the corps de ballet was again notable for its high standard. Earlier in the programme “Prismatic Variations” had revealed the increasing ability of two regular members of the company, Georgene Walker and Loma Rogers. Both dancers have achieved solo status and will be seen again in “Giselle.” Terry Westmoreland again thrilled the audience with the spectacular “Sabre Dance,” making some very difficult leans with great skill. “Giselle” will replace “Swan Lake,” “Prismatic Variations” and ‘Sabre Dance” on the programme tonight and for the remainder of the season. with the exception of the matinee, which will be a return to the ‘Swan Lake” programme.
