Expensive Talk

(New Zealand Preu Association)

DUNEDIN. Nov. 3. Speech is no longer free —in one sense—in the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. A price of £6 Ids for three minutes has been placed on it.

At the opening of the 1965 assembly today the Rev. R. A. G. Maddock, of Howick, convener of the business committee, said a time and motion study was being made of the assembly. “This is so that we

know how the time of assembly is spent.” The assembly cost £7OOO. “It is £6 10s for every three-minute speech you make.” he warned amid laughter. He asked everyone to speak briefly. "We don’t want to stifle debate. We want to cut out tedious discussion of small matters and leave time for the big issues.”
