MALAYSIAN COMMAND

Appointment Announced The appointment of Lieu-tenant-Cotonel B. M. Poananga as commanding officer of the Ist Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, tn Malaysia, was announced in Christchurch by the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre). Colonel Poananga’s appointment becomes effective from November 6 and he succeeds Lieutenant-Colonel R. M. Gurr, who has commanded the bat-

tailion since November. 1963. Colonel Gurr will be returning to a staff appointment at Army Headquarters, Wellington.

Since July Colonel Poananga has commanded the battalion depot at Burnham Military Camp. Before this appointment he was Director of Personnel Administration at Army Headquarters, Wellington.

Colonel Poananga has been in the Regular Army for 23 years, joining in Wellington in 1942. He has served overseas in J Force and in Korea, and in 1962 he was a company commander wih rhe 2nd Battalion in Malaysia. In recent months he visited the battalion in Borneo. .
