All Ready For Exam.

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, November 2. Arrangements for the conduct of the 1965 School Certificate examination had almost been completed, education authorities said today. Nearly 38,000 students, about 2000 more than last year, will sit the examination, which begins on Monday, November 15. The last papers will be taken .11 days later. Students have the option of choosing four or five of the 35 subjects offering in which to take the examination, although one must be English.

A special group of 364, however, will be tested in only one subject. This group is made up mainly of people who have left school but have decided through night class and correspondence courses to attempt the examination. Included in this group are a number of Maoris.

A second group of 244 consisting primarily of postschool students will seek to qualify for a certificate of attainment. They will have to pass in five subjects. A feature of this year’s examination will be a special mathematics paper for pupils in some schools in their fourth form last year were introduced to a pilot scheme to test overseas developments -in mathematics teaching.

The curriculum was intended to give pupils a better preparation for the study of higher mathematics. Training college and university students have been hired by the department to assist in the conduct of the examination, and a full complement of markers has been arranged. Departmental officials said today that administration work had been made much easier by the use of a computer obtained by the department early last year. It had been particularly valuable in determining the allocation of markers to papers. With the aid of the computer the department hopes to have results posted out to candidates about the middle of January.
