Plans For Te Anau Hotel

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 2. The reconstruction of the Te Anau Hotel will begin in January. The hotel was partly destroyed by fire last month. The Minister of Tourism (Mr Eyre) said today that the project was being designed by the Tourist Hotel Corporation architect, Mr W. Pearson, and working drawings were expected to be finished by the end of November. The new hotel will be set well back from the roadway. There will be a single-storey main block, housing a reception area, lounge, dining room and kitchen, joined to a separate two-storey bedroom block by an enclosed glazed link.

Features include a semienclosed dining court, a pool court with a small heated swimming pool and a conference hall with a maximum seating capacity of 200. It will also be used for film screenings, for dancing, and as a games room.

Mr Eyre said the east end of the main block had been specially designed to cater for Milford Track walkers. The bedroom block had

been planned initially to replace the 58 beds lost in the fire in 28 rooms and a suite. “However, the block has been planned with space to allow expansion up to 120 beds.” Each room would have its own bathroom and each bedroom would open on to its own balcony. “As a result of a recent inspection of Australian hotels and motels, the corporation’s architect has recommended two innovations which are to be included in the new hotel,” Mr Eyre said. “Instead of having single divan-type beds in each bedroom, many of the new rooms will have a double bed and a single bed. “Guests will be able to make themselves a cup of tea or coffee at any time.” Mr Eyre said he expected tenders to be called within a few weeks.
