ANTARCTIC BASES

Illustrated Address An illustrated address on bases in the Antarctic was given to the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society last evening by Mr John Bechervaise, an Australian observer of United States Antarctic operations and a former station leader at the Australian Mawson base. Mr Bechervaise returned from the Antarctic early yesterday morning after a stay of several weeks, and he has previously spent several seasons in Australian Antarctic territory. He compared the Australian Antartic bases with the United States and New Zealand bases he saw on his visit. He showed slides of the Australian Mawson and Davis bases, the Russian base at Mirny, and of Heard Island.
