TELEPHONE CHAOS
Joke-A-Day Too Popular
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) STOCKHOLM
A joke-<a-d.ay on the Swedish telephone system caused such chaos that it had to be suspended. The joke was told by an automatic answering apparatus belonging to a Swedish firm whose name, literally translated, means "Hi, You There Company Ltd.” Callers ringing the company were supplied with a new joke every day. It became so popular that on one peak day nearly 78,000 calls were made. Only 17,000 of them could be put through. The rest, according to the post office, caused complaints as they blocked other lines.
