SYDNEY, Oct. 26.

A gunman who shot a young constable at Darlinghurst, an inner suburb yesterday, is believed to l)e on board one of two liners in the Tasman Sea.

The Commissioner of Police (Mr Norman Allan) said today urgent cheeks were being made with the P. and 0.Orient liners Arcadia and Canberra.

“We have supplied the captains of both ships with the name and description of a man we wish to Interview in connexion with the armed hold-up at the Darlinghurst food store and the subsequent shooting of Constable P. Dempsey,” Mr Allan said.

The Arcadia left Sydney on

a cruise at 5.12 p.m. yesterday, while the Canberra, bound for North America via New Zealand, cleared Sydney Heads at 8 p.m.

Detectives believe a redheaded man. who possibly shaved off his beard, signed on as a last-minute member of the crew of one of these liners. New Zealand police have been notified.

Both the Arcadia and the Canberra are due in Auckland on October 28.
