MAINTENANCE BY FATHERS

Illegitimate Children

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, October 26. The Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) told Parliament today that he believed it would be improper for the Government to suggest to magistrates what decisions they should make regarding maintenance levied on fathers of illegitimate children. Mrs R. M. Stevenson (Govt., Taupo) asked the Minister what steps would need to be taken to have the judiciary increase the amount of maintenance levied on fathers of illegitimate children “to a sum more in keeping with today’s standard of living.” She also asked the Minister if he proposed to initiate any such move.

Mr Hanan said a magistrate had the discretion to award such sums as were thought reasonable, and added that he did not see how the matter could be taken further.
