(New Zealand Press Association)
HAMILTON, Oct. 26.
With the aim of greater unity among Maori people, representatives of tribes throughout New Zealand agreed at Mangatoatoa Pa, Tokanui, to united action under the leadership of King Koroki.
An independent federation, to take control of the Maori Affairs Department, Maori boards of trustees and Maori land courts, was proposed by Mr Takiwaiora Hopa, of Hamilton.
First, the people must become one, he said. It was stated that a petition was presented to Parliament last August, asking for an independent federation to take over the three departments.
A body comprising 12 members from each of the four Maori electorates, and elected by the people Is envisaged. People from the Tuhoi and Tai Rawhiti tribes, relatives and friends of the late Mr J. Waititi, the Maori educationist from the east coast who died recently, formed a large part of the gathering. There were also many from the South Island, and representatives of tribes throughout the South Island.
